The Train Station

chamber adopts llantwit major train stationLlantwit Major Chamber of Trade and Commerce (LMCOTAC) has teamed up with Arriva Trains Wales/Trenau Arriva Cymru to generate a sense of community spirit at the town’s new railway station.

The organisation, which works to promote and encourage local businesses in Llantwit Major, has adopted the town’s railway station under the Arriva Trains Wales ‘Adopt a Station’ initiative, which aims to actively involve communities to care for and take pride in their local railway station.

A plaque officially marking the station’s ‘adoption’ was unveiled at Llantwit Major Station on Wednesday 14 September 2005.

Tony Short, station manager for Arriva Trains Wales, said: “We welcome the opportunity to work with LMCOTAC on this initiative. It’s all about encouraging communities to take a more active interest in their local station and we are grateful to them for their commitment.”

“We are confident that the adoption will help us keep the new railway station in the best possible condition. When the local community is involved, a greater sense of pride and respect is developed and people don’t want to see others littering and vandalising their station,” he said.

Station ‘adopters’ are asked to carry out regular spot checks relating to the tidiness and cleanliness of the station, in addition to those already undertaken by Arriva Trains Wales. Any issues that may need addressing are then advised to the local station manager. In return, adopters are offered travel vouchers for use on the Arriva Trains Wales network.

Steve Hunt, president of LMCOTAC, said: “We are looking forward to supporting the ‘Adopt a Station’ initiative and to working with Arriva Trains Wales to help keep the new station an attractive and welcoming gateway to the town.

“We are also pleased that we will be helped in our efforts by Bill Price, a local resident who has campaigned, with others, to bring the railway back to Llantwit Major. By working together we hope to shape the station’s future and enhance what is already an excellent local facility.”

The initiative has already been successful at over 80 stations throughout the Arriva Trains Wales network with the British Transport Police reporting a drop in anti-social behaviour at some stations.
