About the Chamber

The Llantwit Major Chamber of Trade and Commerce was formed in 1975 following an open meeting at the Town Hall which was well attended. Mr Ian Colston was the first President, Mr Ray Morrish was the Vice President and the first Treasurer was Mr Stephens from the then Midland Bank. The Chamber was formed at a point of big political changeover. The Llantwit Major Parish Council became the Town Council, Cowbridge Rural District Council became the Vale of Glamorgan Borough Council and the County changed from Glamorgan County Council to South Glamorgan County Council.

The first big project for the Chamber was a new town plan and many meetings were held with the new County & borough Councils to discuss the Chamber's vision for Llantwit's future growth and development. The early Chamber developed strong links with the other Chambers in the area through the organisation South Glamorgan Chamber of Trade and the Cardiff Chamber of Commerce. Tourism in the Vale was also an important project then.

Now, more than 30 years on it is still going strong and its members are taking on new projects, supporting local initiatives and working with the Town Council to help improve the appearance of the Town, local trade and tourism.

The Chamber offers its members:

> Regular meetings, some with invited guests as a response to members wishes.
> Representation for all local businesses.
> Links with Local Authorities and Various organisations.
> The ability to influence decision making in areas important to local businesses.
> Networking – Possibility to expand your business locally.
> Meet other like-minded business people and exchange views and ideas.
> Free advertising for your business through our Member’s Directory.
> Featured Business - free advertising for your business.
> Access to special offers, including media and internet advertising.

Costs of Joining

The cost of joining the Chamber is currently £10 per year, although this is planned to rise shortly as a reflection of the amount of larger scale projects we are taking on. Do we have to volunteer for anything?
There is no requirement to volunteer, participate or donate anything, anytime. Committee members are elected from nominations, of which the nominee has every right to decline. Officers of the Committee do have an obligation to attend Committee meetings and to carry out their specific tasks, but nobody is forced to become a Committee member or indeed an Officer of the Committee .
Do we have to attend meetings?
There is no requirement for any member to attend open meetings, although it is highly recommended. All members are informed in advance of all Open meetings.
